Book Seventeen

December 09, 2011 @ Jackie's

A Redbird Christmas, by Fannie Flagg

Gathering around the groaning board - 'tis the season!

Black bean chowder with yogurt/cilantro relish!  Click here for the recipe!

And delicious southern (just keeping with the flavor of the book, y'all, 'cause that's how we roll, yo)
Key-Lime pie for dessert - check out the book for the recipe.

REAL fruitcake, compliments of Jack!  Contact Jack for the recipe.  And contact Sally for the recipe for the yummy appetizers and contact Cora Lee to learn more about her decadent home-made eggnog custard!  And ask Cory about her secret tomato soup (in honor of Oswald Tomatosoup Campbell?) and be sure to find out from Anne where she shops for bread and delicious dip!  And don't forget to request the inside scoop from the Napa Valley wineries without whom our wine intake would be severely hampered.

A tad simplistic, but a sweet story - perfect for the holidays!

All seven Literary Spirits: God bless us, every one.

Book Sixteen

November 4, 2011 @ Cora Lee's

The Name of the Rose, by Umberto Eco

Borrowed (and at the last minute, copied) from the library!  Unfortunately, the Netflix movie was cracked and we were unable to watch it, so we'll have to catch Sean Connery another time.  Curse you, Netflix!

Yummy crackers and prosciutto cheese wheel thingies!  Prosciutto is Italian, right?

Delicious green pea salad from Mr. D's.  A delicious accompaniment to the pizza!

We love the ambiance of a November fire!

Four of seven joined in great conversation that included the comment,
"Only I can sleep with that celibate man!"

Let the Great World Spin, by Colum McCann

Must. Get. Wine. Open.

The vessels, the elixer, and just a peek of the loaf.  Book club - hurray!

I believe the final incarnation of the toast was, "Here's to the onset of Autumn!"

Sally's delicious chili, and Stacey's artful arrangement of her dinner.

Amazing how an Irishman can so convincingly portray New York women on the stroll, eh?

Gritty, to be sure, but engrossing.  We loved this book.

An early birthday celebration for Stacey - white cake with white frosting!  Next month, strawberry!

We love Sally's collection of past-reads!

Another great meeting of like-minded literary spirits!

Book Fourteen

July 29, 2011 @ The Cowfish (in the back "back" room)

Etta, by Gerald Kolpan

In recognition of the Old West theme, I had a brewski.

In recogition of the New York connection, Carol had a Cosmopolitan.

In recognition of my addiction to carbs, we ordered smothered fries.  (Bring on the bacon and gorgonzola!)

Of course, we also had lots of other yummy things.

Carol, enjoying her aperitif!

Library books, every one.

Tanned, rested and ready, with our newest member, Anne!

The Scenic Route, by Binnie Kirshenbaum

Only three of the six who gathered actually read the book.  The other three, who shall remain nameless, abandoned the book in favor of the scenic route to other adventures.  Slackers!  UPDATE 6-15-11:  I finished reading the book!  Only two of the group are now slackers.  What a relief.

Delectable delights of the early summer season!

Warm bread and butter - a delectable delight in any season!

Cory's "rhubarb without sugar" face.

To Sally!  She's off galavanting in Italy and was unable to attend.

Carol - researching our next selection and location.  "If you think you don't like me now...!"

A toast to summer!

Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand

From the library or the bookstore, on CD or Kindle, this book absorbed us.

There's nothing quite like Tony's pizza, straight from the oven.  Yum!

Can't you almost smell it?  I'm a little obsessed - sad, but true.

Sally and Cory in mid-conversation.  Were they discussing survival, resilience or redemption?

Yes!  We finally got to consume the bottle we carted around for over a year!
(Stacey looks a little unnerved by the cat!)

Proof that the nectar was actually uncorked and poured.

Cora Lee's lemon bars (I admit it - I had two).

And what's a suitable accompaniment to lemon bars?
Japanese plum wine!

We seven Literary Spirits, all together at last.  Except Snape, who is attending college in Laramie.

I Love Charlotte Bronte, by Michelle Daly

Three types of wine - one type of fun!

Cabbage burgers, also known as bierock or runza.
Okay, so they're not Irish, but we loved 'em anyway!

Okay, so we had wine.  And cookies.  But we also had healthful grapes!

We're donating our copies to the library.
(At least, I am, and not fast enough, I might add.)

Four of Seven.
When will we have all seven together?
The world may never know.

A delicious nightcap!

This bottle has not yet been consumed. We KNOW it's at Cora Lee's house. She has promised to unearth it and bring it to our next meeting:
